Safety: corrugated sheet applications

11 March 2022

For safety against falls from a height on a metal sheet cover, it is not enough to install a standard lifeline product. Before proceeding with the installation, in fact, the necessary analyzes must be made concerning the composition of the structure and the verification of the material used for it.

Corrugated sheet metal is among those, perhaps most sensitive to post-installation risks. for this reason we try which lifeline for sheet metal should be chosen.

Corrugated sheet: What are the risks?

If we talk about external coatings, today technology has allowed us to apply metal roofs such as sheet metal going to have excellent results for safety and durability over time also respecting acceptable parameters of acoustic and thermal insulation, in some situations better than other materials used.

But when it comes to the installation of lifelines on metal roofs we must be careful of the risks that could arise from an incorrect choice or application.

It is not always possible to install a lifeline on a sheet metal cover using poles as anchor points, this depending on the type of substructure present and its bearing capacity. In addition, the installation by means of poles requires particular attention to waterproofing, which if poorly performed can be ineffective in carrying out its task.

What are the reference standards?

The reference standards for the installation of fall arrest systems on corrugated sheets are many, so it is necessary to contact people competent in the field. Among them, there are national and regional laws to be considered, in addition to the technical standards on system design and device testing respectively UNI 11560: 2014 and UNI 11578: 2015. In addition, the design must take into account the compatibility of the installed devices with the PPE (personal protective equipment) that will be used by operators at height. For this reason, reference is made to the UNI 11158: 2015 technical standards, to the ISPELS guidelines and to the indications provided from time to time by the competent bodies.

What is the solution for use as a fall arrest system for corrugated sheet?

Spider Linee Vita offers systems characterized by a quality that can be placed among the best fall protection systems on the market. The most performing and recommended line for most existing metal roofs is the OCTOPUS model.

The OCTOPUS line allows to considerably reduce the risk of infiltration due to incorrect waterproofing of the poles, this is because the fixing takes place with rivets specially made to be waterproof themselves. In addition, the fixing of the same rivets on the sheet takes place on the highest part of the same, an area where stagnation of water or its continuous presence is very unlikely. This method of fixing is also much faster and less invasive than the affixing of a conventional pole that requires cutting and subsequent restoration of the cover.

Compared to other similar sheet metal devices, the OCTUPUS device has a shape that allows the load to be distributed over a larger surface, as well as having a modular structure with different versions of different lengths, allowing the system to adapt to woollen of different thickness. In fact, the sheets are characterized by increasingly thin thicknesses, making it essential to have a device suitable for distributing the forces of a possible fall over a surface as large as possible.

The main applications can be found on horizontal inclined civil and industrial roofs, i.e. warehouses, condominiums, industrial buildings and civil buildings, whenever there is a need to constitute an anchor point for protection systems against falls from a height.

Like all fall arrest systems, this one is also subject to careful periodic inspection, with particular regard to mechanical, chemical or thermal damage that can be encouraged by particularly polluted environments.
